<p>Step-up Moving Coil Transformers match low-output, low impedance moving-coil pickups to standard phono preamps. The harmonic distortion in Moving Coil Transformers is greatest at the lowest frequencies and falls rapidly as the frequency rises, whereas in transistor amplifiers distortion more usually rises as the frequency rises. The outcome is that although transformers aren&#8217;t absolutely free of distortion, the distortion is very benign compared to the distortion produced by many transistor amplifiers.</p>

<p>Direct Box transformers convert unbalanced line level signals to balanced microphone level signals to feed long cables while retaining bandwidth and eliminating hum. Extensively used with musical instrument hookups, they eliminate hum and buzz because of their excellent Common Mode Rejection Ratio. These noise problems can plague systems where guitars and stage instruments (keyboards, samplers, computer, and drum machines) are far from the mixer and abnormally high ground-voltage-differences are the norm.</p>

<p>Typically used to balance any high impedance unbalanced input, for eliminating hum and buzz in line-level signals, Faraday-shielded input transformers are the preferred solution. Transformer-less inputs suffer “breakthrough” noise in electrically-hostile environments, but transformers are unaffected.</p>

<p>Microphone transformers are used for impedance matching to the pre-amplifier stage – for mic preamp input circuits to match microphones to preamp, in tube microphones for matching high impedance tube circuits to normal output impedance, and in ribbon microphones to transform very low voltage, very low impedance ribbon motors to normal microphone output levels.</p>
